DOJ SUPPORTS 1st AMENDMENT RIGHTS FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS
Ever since 9/11, people have gotten a little funky about cameras… There have been numerous incidents of casual and professional photographers being harassed or arrested, having cameras confiscated or their memory cards erased… all for exercising a fundamental constitutional right. Taking pictures.
Many would be photographers have found themselves at odds with law enforcement officials for filming officers in the line of duty, even though this is perfectly legal. Just search YouTube and you’re likely to find many examples.
The DOJ has issued a statement warning law enforcement that “Private individuals have a First Amendment right to record police officers in the public discharge of their duties.” The statement continues, “[O]fficers violate individuals’ Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights when they seize and destroy such recordings without a warrant or due process.”
You can read the full DOJ statement here.
Law enforcement officers have a difficult job, and must make life and death decisions on the spot about who poses a threat and who doesn’t. I have the utmost respect and support for the work they do, and the risks they take on daily basis.
I also really like the first amendment.

IRON MAN 3
Iron Man 3 loses Jessica Chastain, but Rebecca Hall will be taking her place. And by the looks of it, that’s not a bad thing. Scarlett Johannson will be sitting this one out.
Shane Black (known for writing Lethal Weapon) will be directing, with a projected release date of May 3rd, 2013. (Gemma Arterton, Diane Kruger and Ilsa Fisher were also originally considered). Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Kingsley and Don Cheadle will reprise their roles.
Bought from Paramount, Disney paid $115 million for the rights in a deal that also included the Avengers. Production was planned to shoot in Michigan, but North Carolina was able to steal it away offering $20 million in tax credits.
Details on plot are sparse, but according to Variety, Hall will play a scientist who creates a nanotechnology virus known as Extremis which falls into the hands of terrorists. The story borrows heavily from Warren Ellis’ “Iron Man: Extremis.”
I WAS ON FOX LAST NIGHT
If you missed it, I was on FOX News last night – you can see the full story here. Julin Jean, star of my horror film Spirit Camp was carjacked in the Hieghts area of Houston, and her mini-cooper was stolen. It was like a scene right out of a horror movie.
The perp stuck a gun in Julin’s face, forced her out of the car, and she escaped with a sprained ankle.
She’s lucky to be alive.
Fox did a fun story drawing comparisons between her on screen persona of B movie scream queen, and real life victim. I think it helped bring a little closure and levity to a traumatic experience.
Special thanks to Ned Hibbard for all his support of the community, and his excellent journalism – he always finds a perfect balance of delivering news and making it engaging, entertaining and fun.
